How to Change Your Mac Wallpaper Automatically

You can use a folder of pictures or Apple’s shuffled aerials to change the wallpaper over time. The controls and intervals available depend on the wallpaper and macOS version.

Add a folder of your own images

  1. Put the images you want to use in a folder on your Mac. Choose pictures with enough resolution for your display.
  2. Open System Settings → Wallpaper. Under Your Photos, choose Add Photo → Choose Folder, select the folder, and click Open.
  3. Select the added folder or its available shuffle option. Look for the shuffle or timing controls near the current wallpaper and choose an available interval.

If you do not see a folder or timing control, check the instructions for your macOS version: the layout and labels have changed. Keep the folder and its images available to the Mac.

Shuffle Apple aerials

In Wallpaper settings, choose Shuffle Aerials. Apple says the Shuffle menu near the top controls how often the selected aerials rotate. Some options may need to download before they can be used.

Keep each change looking good

Choose images with similar shapes to your screen so one photo does not crop differently from the next. Remove small previews or low-quality copies from the folder. If you have more than one monitor, check each display and the Show on all Spaces setting.
